Help, advice and support site

The UIS will be upgrading the main VPN (vpn.uis.cam.ac.uk) during an extended weekly maintenance window between 08:00 and 12:00 on Sunday, 10 December. There will be a short outage during this time. After the upgrade, connected users will need to reconnect.

More information from the UIS below:

Why we need to upgrade

We need to upgrade the VPN operating system to remain on a supported version. This will also enable us to offer new features in the future.

How to support users experiencing issues

We have carried out thorough testing on Windows, macOS, Android and Ubuntu operating systems. Devices that have been correctly configured should continue to connect without any changes.

If users encounter any issues, please ask them to re-install the VPN connection by following the VPN connection instructions on the IT help and support website. (Remember to change Cambridge to HSPS).

If they are still encountering difficulties, please ask them to contact the service desk, providing the following details:

  • the username they used to connect (for example, spqr1+vpn@cam.ac.uk
  • the date and time they attempted to connect
  • any error messages they see when trying to connect
  • which operating system and version they are using
  • copy and paste the text that appears in the yellow results box on the My IP address website
  • whether they have experienced problems in the past
  • the name of the device if they have a University Managed Desktop (UMD) device (For example, UIS-MC043266 or UMD-ADMIN618371. To find this on a Windows device select the Windows start button then choose ‘Settings’ followed by ‘System’. You can find this on MacOS by selecting the shield in the menu bar)

This will help us to diagnose the issue and find a solution.
